Strategic Plan for the College of Management

Vision

Our vision is to become a prime education hub in southern Taiwan that effectively adds value to local industries.

Mission

Our mission is to produce talented management personnel by providing instruction that draws on both theory and practice, as well as corporate ethics. This mission in turn gives rise to four related teaching objectives, as follows:

  1. Equip students with management expertise by integrating academic theories with industrial demands.
  1. Produce professionals with innovative spirits by fostering creativity in education.
  1. Inspire students to embrace teamwork and business ethics by promoting positive attitudes in the learning environment.
  1. Help students better adapt to the challenges of globalization by advancing cross cultural awareness and guiding students to develop a more international outlook.

Enhancing the standards of teaching

1. To raise the quality of faculty instruction, social media groups have been set up, such as a College core curriculum group and an academic faculty group, which allow faculty from similar disciplines to interact and share knowledge and experience. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in seminars and camps that promote development and growth.

2. Promote faculty evaluations, which in turn spur teachers to continually improve

3. Promote ACCSB and AACSB accreditation, and based on the suggestions of consultants, establish professional standards of instruction.

Pursuing external resources

1. Actively vie for projects and resources from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and other public enterprises so as to strengthen the practical business ability of instructors, with the aim of setting up a Business Assistance Center and thus achieving our ultimate objective: to become a leading education hub in southern Taiwan that effectively adds value to local industries.

Promoting practical learning

1. Afford students more practical knowledge and experience by allowing them to implement Ministry of Education projects, such as the Enhancing Competence through Practice Project and University Features Pilot Project.

2. Actively vie for projects from the NPTU Research and Development Division, reward teachers who participate in university-industry collaborative projects, and allow students to gain first-hand practical experience while working on such projects.

3. Increase the number of courses taught by industry experts and practitioners.

Offering an international perspective

1.  Actively vie for projects from the NPTU Office of International Affairs, and encourage teachers and students to partake in both local and overseas exchange activities, so as to broaden their international horizons.

2.  Strengthen the ability of faculty to conduct professional courses in English, thus attracting even more overseas students to study at NPTU.

Training students to integrate and coordinate

1.  Encourage students to take courses involving practical projects so as to nurture their creative-thinking and problem-solving abilities.

2.  Establish the innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Research Center to encourage students to participate in entrepreneurship competitions, which allow them to apply their business and management knowledge and the ability to integrate skills across separate disciplines.

3.  Offer cross-discipline degree programs to gain professional knowledge in various fields.

Elevating students ethical character

1.  Elevating students to partake in corporate internships. Guided by their teachers, interns gain a clearer perspective of corporate culture and a more acute awareness of the importance of corporate ethics.

2.  Urge students to partake in student club activities, which help to imbue in students the correct the correct ethical principles.

3.  Implement a weekly mentor meeting counseling system, whereby mentors, through regular interaction with students, instill in them the correct ethical and moral values.

Measures to achieve COM mission

1.  Encouraging students to take professional license exams: To enhance students’ competitiveness in the workforce, all departments in the College have adopted measures incentivizing the obtainment of professional licenses that students must reach before they can successfully graduate.

2.  Implementing external internship programs: The College offers and promotes internship programs for seniors, allowing them to gain a better insight into the culture of the workplace and increase their practical and professional expertise.

3.  Emphasizing innovation and the ability to think and solve problems: Through a variety of innovative teaching methods, faculty challenge students and train them to think independently using case methods. Moreover, through employing and repeating these methods, students are able to enhance their practical problem-solving abilities.

4.  Strengthening collaboration with industry: College of Management faculty are encouraged to set up academic communities to better utilize College facilities and resources, and thus enhance collaboration across academic disciplines and cooperation with industry and business.

5.  Encouraging academic departments to set up courses conducted in English, as well as overseas trips, so as to help students acquire a more international outlook.

6.  Encouraging departments to promote student exchange opportunities and dual degree programs, to actively enroll foreign students, and help broaden students’ global horizons by creating a truly international learning environment.

Development characteristics and objectives

  1. In recent years, the College of Management and its various departments have been working to implement several projects, including the Unique University Project, the Innovative Teaching Project, and the NPTU AI Future Project. This has helped to shape the direction of development for the College of Management, and much of this development involves Commerce 4.0. Under Commerce 4.0, each department promotes a wide array of initiatives, such as big data in social media marketing, big data applications in the real estate market, financial technology, applications of augmented and virtual reality, innovative cross-discipline integration, enterprise innovations, and cross-border e-commerce platforms. To strengthen these key points of development, the College has established three major centers (Center for Big Data Research and Application, Smart Innovation Creativity Entrepreneurship Research Center, and VAR Shopping Marketing Lab) and provides each department the resources necessary for continued development.

Features of Instruction

1.   To help students develop abilities in various disciplines, each department has set up cross-discipline credit programs. In 2015, the College of Management established three credit programs that are available to all NPTU students: Innovative Digital Marketing Personnel, Entrepreneur Management, and Innovative Cross-Discipline Integration. These three courses correspond to the most recent trends in industry and allow students to gain the latest knowledge. Moreover, each department has designed external internship courses for seniors, which run for three months to a year, and enable students to acquire practical, on-the-job experience, so that they may be ready for the workforce as soon as they graduate. In 2018 the three credit programs were combined to form the Intelligent Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Program. In2019, as part of a Ministry of Education scheme, a new program was added, known as the VAR Intelligent ICE and Big Data Application Program. These two programs emphasize cross-discipline learning, while the latter Program focuses particularly on business applications of VR and AR technology, as well as big data analysis.

Cooperating with Industry and Combining Research and Instruction

1.  By carrying out projects commissioned by local government or private enterprises, faculty members partake in university-industry cooperation, which allows students to complete a range of practical tasks. Through such projects, faculty are able to train students in the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical real-life situations. Faculty guide students in conducting special research projects and taking part in both internal and external student competitions, in which they often gain excellent results. In addition, instructors invite experts from industry to teach classes and share their real-life experiences face to face with students. This enables students to connect theoretical knowledge from class with practical real-world knowledge and experience.

2.  Faculty are encouraged to combine teaching with research. For example, during the process of instruction, faculty members might encounter a problem or an issue that can be resolved through further research and exploration. This not only benefits them from a research perspective, but also in terms of instruction. Faculty members propose research plans that correlate to their field of expertise. The more research they conduct, the more in-depth their knowledge of this field becomes, and the more it benefits the content of their instruction. Furthermore, by allowing students to participate in research projects for the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) or any other research units, students are able to acquire knowledge of sophisticated research methods and develop an inquisitive attitude, which together enhance students’ ability to carry out future research initiatives.
